What you can see

The park cites the largest white-tailed eagle nesting area in this part of Europe and the largest cormorant and grey heron colony in Croatia. Species that birders often look for include black stork, black-crowned night heron, western marsh harrier and common kingfisher. Sightings depend on the season and are never guaranteed.

  • Spring and autumn: migration brings the highest numbers of birds.
  • Summer: a smaller peak, with nesting colonies.
  • Winter: fewer birds, but thousands of wild geese and ducks from West Siberia visit the wider park area.

Water level, weather and backup plans

The wetland floods from late February or early March to late July or early August, and the water level decides which routes are possible. Whether we go on foot, by boat or by small boat, and where, depends on the conditions that week. I keep backup routes and other sites ready and confirm the plan shortly before your visit. Mosquitoes can be numerous in hot periods, and the park has no bird hides, so a telescope is useful. Park tickets are paid at the park’s own prices and can change during the year.

Your guide

I am a licensed tour guide for Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Syrmia counties and I know the area well. I meet your group, take care of the reservation with the park and lead the day in English. You can combine it with a Vukovar history tour or an Ilok wine tasting. Keen birders can also read the guide to birdwatching in Kopački Rit.

Frequently asked questions

Who guides the birdwatching tour?

I do. I am a licensed local guide, I speak English and Croatian, and I plan the day around your group's target species, the season and the water level.

What if the water level or weather rules out a route?

Kopački Rit floods from late February or early March to late July or early August, and the level decides which routes are possible. I keep alternatives ready, such as a different part of the park, a boat or small boat trip, or another wetland site in eastern Croatia, so the day still works.

When is the best time to visit?

The park names April to June and August to October as the best periods for wildlife and birds. Bird numbers peak during the spring and autumn migrations, with a smaller peak in summer, and thousands of wild geese and ducks from West Siberia visit the wider park area in winter.

How much does it cost?

My guiding fee depends on the group size, the length of the day and transport, and I give you a quote on request. Park tickets are paid at the park's own prices. On its 2026 list, park entrance is €3, a ticket with a boat trip is €15 per adult and a small boat is €30 per person per hour. Prices can change during the year.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. The park requires reservations, and groups must reserve in writing. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the visit. I take care of this for you.

Which birds can we expect?

Around 300 bird species have been recorded in the park, and more than 140 nest there permanently or temporarily. The park cites the largest white-tailed eagle nesting area in this part of Europe. Sightings depend on the season and are never guaranteed.

What should I bring?

Binoculars, a telescope if you have one, waterproof footwear, layers and insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be numerous in hot periods. The park has no bird hides, so a telescope is useful.
