BIRDWATCHING IN KOPAČKI RIT:
WHEN TO GO AND WHAT TO SEE

Kopački Rit is a wetland nature park near Osijek in eastern Croatia, where the Drava flows into the Danube. Around 300 bird species have been recorded here, and more than 140 nest in the park permanently or temporarily, which makes it one of the most rewarding birding places in the region.

When is the best time to go?

The park names April to June and August to October as the best periods, although it is open all year. Bird numbers peak during the spring and autumn migrations, and there is a smaller peak in summer. Winter has fewer birds, but thousands of wild geese and ducks from West Siberia visit the wider park area.

How do floods change the visit?

The wetland floods from late February or early March to late July or early August. From August the landscape is drier and most birds gather at fishponds and rivers. Because the water level changes naturally from year to year, the park decides which routes are possible, and tours can be made by boat, on foot or by terrain vehicle. It is wise to confirm current conditions before you travel.

What can you see?

The park cites the largest white-tailed eagle nesting area in this part of Europe, as well as the largest cormorant and grey heron colony in Croatia. A birding guide to the site lists black stork, black-crowned night heron, western marsh harrier and common kingfisher among its top species. Typical visits produce roughly 35 to 63 species in a day, according to the park, and the best single-day count it reports is 93. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Practical tips

  • Book ahead. The park requires reservations for its programmes, and bird watching groups are limited to 10 people.
  • Allow enough time. The park's minimum is one hour, and it recommends at least three hours for experienced birders.
  • Bring a telescope. There are no bird hides or platforms, so binoculars and a scope help.
  • Prepare for insects. Mosquitoes can be numerous in hot periods, so bring repellent and light long sleeves.
  • Check prices. On the park's 2026 price list the entrance ticket is €3, a boat trip is €20 per person per hour and its own bird watching programme is €40 per person per hour. The park may change prices during the year.

How to visit from Vukovar or Osijek

The park entrance and information centre are in the village of Kopačevo near Osijek. If you would rather not organise the reservation, transport and local context yourself, I offer private birdwatching days in Kopački Rit with a licensed local guide in English, with backup routes if the water level or weather changes the plan. You can also combine a visit with a history tour of Vukovar or an Ilok wine tasting.
